The sextant is an instrument which allows to measure the angles between two objects like two points of a coast or a star (traditionally the Sun) and the horizon. Knowing the elevation of the Sun and the hour of the day it could be determined the latitude where the observer is. This determination can be made with a great precision through a mathematic calculations of simple application.
